How to Use Natural Oils on Skin & Hair: A Practical Routine
Share
Traditional Middle Eastern oils are simple, but that simplicity creates its own question: you have the bottle — now what?
This guide is the practical answer. It covers how to apply natural oils to skin and hair, in what order, how much, and how to build a routine you will actually keep.

Three Principles First
- Less than you think. Natural oils are concentrated. A few drops covers more than most people expect, and excess simply sits on the surface.
- Damp skin, not dry. Oils spread further and absorb better on slightly damp skin.
- Consistency beats intensity. A small amount regularly does more for a routine than a heavy application occasionally.
How to Apply Oil to Skin
- Start clean. Apply after washing, while the skin is still slightly damp.
- Warm it first. Put two or three drops in your palm and rub your hands together. Warm oil spreads far better than cold.
- Press, do not rub. Press gently into the skin rather than dragging across it.
- Work outward. Move from the centre outward in slow strokes.
- Give it a minute. Let it absorb before dressing.
Where oils help most: hands and cuticles, elbows and knees, feet, and anywhere that feels dry after washing.
How to Apply Oil to Hair and Scalp
The scalp
- Part the hair in sections.
- Apply a few drops directly to the scalp, not the lengths.
- Massage with fingertips — not nails — in slow circles for a few minutes.
- Leave for 30 minutes or longer, then wash out thoroughly.
The lengths
- Warm two or three drops between your palms.
- Smooth through the mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the roots.
- Apply to damp hair after washing, or as a pre-wash treatment.
Note: oils need proper washing out. Under-washing is the most common complaint, and it is almost always a rinsing problem rather than an oil problem.
Which Oil for What
| Oil | Character | Commonly used for |
|---|---|---|
| Black Seed | Light, absorbs quickly | Everyday skin and scalp use |
| Frankincense | Bright, aromatic | Facial routines, blending |
| Myrrh | Deeper, warmer | Massage, evening use |

A Simple Weekly Routine
Start here and adjust. There is no need to use everything at once.
- Daily — a few drops on hands, cuticles, and any dry areas after washing.
- Two or three times a week — oil the ends of the hair after washing.
- Once a week — a scalp oil massage before washing.
- Occasionally — a slower full-body application, for the ritual as much as the routine.
Common Mistakes
- Using too much. The most frequent error by a wide margin.
- Applying to bone-dry skin. Slightly damp gives far better absorption.
- Oiling the roots and lengths equally. Scalp treatment and lengths treatment are different steps.
- Under-rinsing. Oils need thorough washing out.
- Skipping the patch test. Always test a new oil first.
- Judging after one use. Routines reveal themselves over weeks, not days.
Storage
- Keep bottles tightly closed, away from heat and direct sunlight.
- Do not store in the bathroom if it gets steamy — heat and humidity degrade oils.
- Check the label for shelf life after opening.
- If an oil smells sharp or rancid, discontinue use.
Safety
- For external use only.
- Patch test on a small area before full use.
- Avoid the eye area and broken or irritated skin.
- Discontinue if redness, itching, or discomfort occurs.
- If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a skin condition, consult a qualified professional first.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much oil should I use?
Two or three drops for skin, a few more for hair. Concentrated oils go much further than most people expect.
Should I apply oil to wet or dry skin?
Slightly damp. Oils spread further and absorb better than on completely dry skin.
Can I leave oil in my hair overnight?
Many people do, particularly on the scalp. Protect your pillow, and wash thoroughly the next day.
Why does my hair feel greasy afterwards?
Usually too much oil or insufficient rinsing. Use fewer drops and wash more thoroughly.
Can I mix different oils together?
Yes. Black seed works well as a base with a small amount of frankincense or myrrh added.
How long before I notice anything?
These are traditional cosmetic preparations, and individual experiences vary. Give any routine several weeks, and keep expectations realistic.
